Crovan are covered in dark feathers and have black beaks, but have a relatively humanoid build. They are more agile that humans and possess a natural gift for observation. Their hands and feet are strong, talonlike claws, with three fingers and a thumb on each hand. They have small black beady eyes and are quite light for their size due to their hollow bones. They average five feet in height and weigh roughly 75 pounds.
A typical crovan’s feathers can be any of the darker shades of color, but are most commonly russet-brown or black. Their plumage rarely possesses patterns or coloration ranging outside the darker spectrum, but some crovan have their feathers dyed for fashion purposes. Their heads are similar to that of the crow or raven and their beaks range from generalist to raptorial in design.
Young crovan grow at a faster rate than human children. They walk a few weeks after hatching, reach the size and development of a 10-year-old human child in half the years, and reach adulthood by age 15. They live about as long as humans do.
PLAYING A CROVANTo a crovan, survival is all there is to life. Anything that can be done to protect the crovan and those they care about must be done. Honor and fairness are rarely concepts that apply to a crovan’s strategy. The only concept of honor crovan concern themselves with is honoring friendships and the respect for individuals they deem close.
Friendships are paramount in a crovan’s life. If a person does a good deed for a crovan, they typically try to repay that good deed in kind. This isn’t always the case, because occasionally the favor comes from someone the crovan doesn’t consider a friend or worthy of respect.
Crovan have a pack mentality, believing that what cannot be done by an individual can be achieved by a group of people. Additionally, crovan are concerned with bettering themselves, but also with bettering communication and relationships within their group. A team is best when everyone in it works together for a common cause and usually that common cause is for the betterment of the crovan.
Despite their consideration for friends and allies, crovan are more often than not greedy. They enjoy acquiring things and taking those things from those they don’t consider friends – sometimes even from their friends. Most crovan are viewed as little more than guttersnipes and cutpurses in the big cities, where their wandering bands usually come to nest.
Crovan seek adventure for the group mentality, the promise of wealth, and perhaps the simple thrill of something new with people worthy of traveling with. To be surrounded by friends and treasure with the promise of comfortability and on occasion a quest is the crovan dream.
